What Is An Ultrasonic Wire Stripper?

An ultrasonic wire stripper is a specialized device for processing mineral-insulated cables and armored cables. Its core function is to efficiently and non-destructively strip the metal sheath and insulation layer of these special cables using the energy of ultrasonic waves.

Working Principle: How to Strip Cables "Non-Destructively"?

Unlike traditional wire stripping methods that rely on blade cutting, the ultrasonic wire stripper's process is more like a "non-destructive separation." Its core principle is as follows:

Energy Conversion: The equipment consists of an ultrasonic generator and a stripping mechanism. The generator converts mains power into high-frequency, high-voltage alternating current, driving the ultrasonic transducer to generate high-frequency mechanical vibrations (ultrasonic waves).

Vibration Transmission and Amplification: These minute vibrations are amplified by an amplitude transformer and ultimately transmitted to the tool head that directly contacts the cable.

"Loosening" Rather Than "Cutting": When the tool head contacts the mineral-insulated cable, the powerful ultrasonic vibrations penetrate the metal sheath and act on the internal insulating mineral powder (such as magnesium oxide).

Automatic Separation: Under high-frequency vibration, the originally dense insulating mineral powder is loosened and broken up, naturally discharged from the cable end. Because ultrasonic waves exert different force characteristics on metal and powder, once the insulation layer is removed, the vibration automatically stops acting on the internal metal core wire, achieving "zero-damage" stripping.

Core Advantages: Why Choose It?

Compared to manual wire stripping, ultrasonic wire strippers offer significant advantages in specific cable processing:

High Efficiency: Stripping speed is 2-3 times faster than manual stripping, significantly reducing labor intensity. Some advanced equipment can even achieve efficiency more than 10 times that of traditional methods.

High Quality, No Damage: Zero damage to the internal copper or nickel core wires, high stripping success rate, and a near 100% pass rate.

Precise and Controllable: Stripping force, time, vibration position, and other parameters can be precisely controlled, ensuring process consistency.

Clean and Environmentally Friendly: Can be equipped with a dust collection port for automatic powder collection, ensuring a clean working environment.

Application Scenarios: Where is it used?

This equipment is primarily used for processing cables with special structures that are difficult to strip using traditional methods:

Mineral-insulated cables (MI cables): Commonly used in high-rise buildings, petrochemical plants, airports, tunnels, ships, offshore oil platforms, aerospace, and other applications with extremely high fire protection and safety requirements.

Armored cables: Cables with a metallic protective layer.

Composition of commercially available ultrasonic wire strippers:

Composition: Mainly consists of an ultrasonic generator and a stripping mechanism.

Structure: Mostly vertical, compact, and stable in operation.

Key parameters (taking a typical device as an example):

Operating frequency: Typically around 20kHz.

Output power: Commonly 1000W - 1500W.

Applicable wire diameter: Can handle cables with diameters ranging from 0.6mm to 30mm.

Stripping time: Only 0.5 to 3 seconds per stripping cycle.

Weight: The entire machine weighs approximately 28-30 kg.

In summary, ultrasonic wire strippers are a specialized solution for specific high-value, difficult-to-process cables, with their core value lying in efficiently, non-destructively, and precisely completing the stripping process.

There are four mechanisms affecting the stripping action;

  1. Cable size

  2. The length being stripped

  3. Powder density (Supplier dependant)

  4. ‘Grip’
